Borrell: US No Longer EU’s Main Ally Amid Changing Transatlantic Relations

Josep Borrell, the former European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs, has declared that the United States is no longer the EU’s main ally, noting that relations between the two sides have entered a new reality. Borrell stated that Americans can no longer view Europeans as reliable partners, and Europe must prepare itself for these new circumstances. He believes that the previous order of political and security relations across the Atlantic is undergoing a transformation. The European diplomat emphasized that EU member states should increasingly rely on their internal capabilities and tools, prioritizing the independent security of the continent. Borrell also referred to recent U.S. comments and threats regarding Greenland, observing that some are pleased with U.S. President Donald Trump’s role as a ‘global policeman.’ He questioned what Europe’s response would be if U.S. military forces were deployed in Greenland, and whether there would be merely verbal affirmations respecting territorial integrity. In recent months, the expansionist approach of the current U.S. administration, which has openly discussed annexing certain autonomous regions or even independent countries, has caused widespread concern among Western governments. Donald Trump previously expressed a desire for Greenland and Canada to become part of the United States.
