Palestine Red Crescent Warns Hepatitis A Outbreak Signals Severe Water Contamination in Gaza

The Director of Health Programs at the Palestine Red Crescent in Gaza has warned that the outbreak of viral Hepatitis A is a clear indicator of severe contamination of drinking water in the region, a situation that has escalated into a serious health crisis following the recent war.

Bashar Murad stated that during the recent clashes, approximately 80 percent of Gaza’s water supply networks were destroyed, forcing many families to rely on transferred water sources. Laboratory tests reveal that this water is contaminated with viruses and bacteria that cause gastrointestinal diseases.

He added that infectious diseases of the digestive system and influenza are on the rise across various parts of Gaza, especially among children who suffer the most from population density, severe cold, and environmental pollution.

The Health Programs Director of the Palestine Red Crescent also noted that prior to the recent rainy season, the organization had prepared a preventative plan to support vulnerable groups and provide emergency aid, but the actual aid delivered has fallen far short of the minimum needs of the affected residents of Gaza.
