Afghanistan and Iran Discuss Expanding Agricultural Cooperation

Officials from Afghanistan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock and Iran’s Ministry of Jihad and Agriculture emphasized expanding bilateral cooperation in agriculture, modern irrigation, and livestock sectors. The talks, held today between deputies from both ministries, focused on exchanging technical experiences, encouraging private sector investment, and improving the transit process for agricultural products.
According to a statement from Afghanistan’s Ministry of Agriculture, discussions covered water resource management, water conservation, and the use of modern irrigation systems such as drip and sprinkler irrigation. Both parties also exchanged views on employing new technologies to boost agricultural productivity.
The deputy minister of agriculture from Afghanistan stated that the Taliban administration is facilitating Iranian private sector investment in agriculture, modern irrigation, livestock, and cross-border cultivation. Additionally, the issue of Afghan agricultural and livestock products’ access to Iranian markets and the creation of transit facilities through Iran were also discussed.
The statement noted that Iranian companies active in designing and producing modern irrigation systems have been invited to participate in Afghanistan’s agricultural exhibitions and invest in this sector. On the other hand, the deputy minister of water and soil from Iran’s Ministry of Jihad and Agriculture spoke about Iran’s readiness to transfer technical experiences, participate in exhibitions, and facilitate the transit of Afghan products.
Furthermore, representatives from Afghanistan’s private sector shared concerns about the monopoly on importing edible eggs from Iran and Afghanistan’s need to import fertile eggs and one-day-old chicks from Iran. This issue could impact the balance of the domestic market and support for local producers.
