Significant Increase in Goods Transit from Mahirud Border to Afghanistan

Local Iranian officials report a substantial rise in the volume and value of goods transiting through the Mahirud border to Afghanistan over the past nine months, with the value of these exchanges exceeding one billion dollars.

According to IRNA news agency, quoting the Director General of South Khorasan Customs, during this period, 27,511 cargo trucks carrying goods worth 1.165 billion dollars were transited from Mahirud customs to Afghanistan. The total weight of these shipments reached over 715,000 tons.

Mohammad Koohgard stated that these goods included fabric, sugar, edible oil, soybean meal, energy drinks, flour, chemical fertilizers, used tires, and various other export items. He added that compared to the same period last year, this volume of transit showed a significant increase in terms of the number of cargo trucks, value, and weight.

The report also notes that in the past nine months, 738 cargo trucks carrying goods from Afghanistan were transited through Mahirud customs to other destinations, valued at more than 61 million dollars, with a total weight exceeding 19,000 tons.

These shipments consisted of dried figs, dried apricots, walnut kernels, black raisins, black cumin, garlic, laboratory equipment, Toyota vehicles, generators, and other items. The Director General of South Khorasan Customs said the transit originating from Afghanistan also demonstrated a notable growth compared to the same period last year.

South Khorasan Province in Iran has four border markets and shares over 330 kilometers of common border with Afghanistan across the districts of Sarbisheh, Nehbandan, Darmian, and Zirkuh. According to IRNA, the Mahirud border has been the most active crossing point in recent years and is considered one of the key official routes between Iran and Afghanistan.
