Swiss Delegation Meets Kabul Prison Authorities to Discuss Inmate Rights and Conditions

The Prison Affairs Department announced that a delegation from the Swiss Cooperation Organization, led by Eric Markli, met on Tuesday with the Deputy for Policy and Professional Affairs of the department to discuss the situation of prisoners and the protection of their human rights.

According to the released statement, the meeting covered topics related to prison conditions, how to address the fundamental rights of inmates, and other work-related issues. These talks come amid ongoing concerns about the state of prisons and prisoners’ access to basic rights in Afghanistan.

The statement further noted that Mohammad Bilal Fateh, Deputy of the Prison Affairs Department, requested cooperation from the Swiss delegation in several areas. According to sources, the representatives of the Swiss Cooperation Organization expressed their readiness to collaborate.

However, human rights organizations have repeatedly emphasized that transparency, independent oversight, and accountability of the Taliban-run prison administration are critical and urgent needs to prevent human rights violations within the prisons.
