Half of Afghanistan’s Population Expected to Live in Cities by 2060

According to an assessment by N-Habitat Afghanistan, it is predicted that by 2060, one in every two residents of the country will live in urban areas, while many cities are unprepared for this rapid transformation.
The organization emphasizes that the absence of standard and safe urban living environments could decrease the quality of life for citizens and increase pressure on urban services. Uneven development, lack of infrastructure, and the expansion of unplanned areas are highlighted as major challenges facing Afghanistan’s cities.
Experts say prioritizing adequate housing, access to essential services, and urban safety are prerequisites for building cities where all residents can live with dignity.
Meanwhile, it is expected that the Taliban administration, upon assuming responsibility for urban management, will adopt transparent and accountable planning; a task that will be difficult to achieve without targeted investment and respect for the rights of urban residents.
