UN: Over 10,000 Displaced in Sudan Amid Ongoing Conflict in Darfur and Kordofan

The United Nations has reported that the ongoing war in Sudan has displaced more than 10,000 people in the states of North Darfur and South Kordofan over the past three days, a situation that has placed unprecedented pressure on civilians.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN agency, stated that over 7,000 people have fled from the towns of Um Baru and Kerenoi in North Darfur. These towns were captured by Rapid Support Forces (RSF) a few days ago, and widespread insecurity has forced residents to abandon their homes.

According to the report, more than 3,000 others have been displaced from the town of Kadugli in South Kordofan. Kadugli is currently surrounded by RSF forces, and its inhabitants are facing severe food shortages and the threat of famine.

The organization added that displacement teams recorded the movement of 780 people from the town of Al-Dalanj in South Kordofan between last Wednesday and Friday due to worsening insecurity. It is also estimated that 510 people from the village of Al-Sanjoqi in Umm Dam Haj Ahmad county of North Kordofan have been forced to leave their homes due to the security situation.

On the previous Wednesday, the Rapid Support Forces announced that they had taken control of the towns of Abu Qamra and Um Baru in North Darfur. Currently, these forces control five Darfur states, with only parts of North Darfur remaining under army administration.

Earlier, the International Organization for Migration stated on December 18 that the number of displaced people in the three Kordofan states between October 26 and December 17 was estimated to be between 50,000 and 445,000. The Sudan crisis, which erupted in April 2023 between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, has so far resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of around 13 million people.
