Iran Condemns Assassination of Two Former Afghan Military Officials in Tehran

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran has condemned the assassination of General Akramuddin Saray and Mohammad Amin Almas, two former Afghan military officials and critics of the Taliban administration, in Tehran, and announced ongoing investigations into the incident.

Ismail Baqaei, spokesperson for the ministry, stated at a press conference on Monday, the 8th of Dey (December 29), that the case has been under close examination by Iran’s security and law enforcement agencies since the early hours. According to him, Iran will not allow the safety of the community and its residents to be compromised.

The spokesperson emphasized that such actions are unacceptable and, if necessary, Iran’s diplomatic apparatus will be involved in the follow-up process. He did not provide further details about the perpetrators or the motives behind the attack.

General Akramuddin Saray, former police commander of Takhar province, along with Mohammad Amin Almas, were shot and killed last Wednesday in the Meydan-e Vali-Asr area of Tehran. Both were former Afghan military figures who had left Afghanistan following the Taliban takeover.

Earlier, Hossein Khosh-Eghbal, governor of Tehran, had announced that investigations into the incident were ongoing but no final conclusions had yet been reached. He promised that the results of the investigations would be announced, but no report has been released so far.

This incident has once again raised concerns among Afghan citizens and human rights observers about the security situation of opponents and critics of the Taliban regime outside Afghanistan—individuals who continue to face serious threats after leaving the country.
