FAO Distributes Over 87,000 Wheat Seed Packs to Afghan Farmers Amid Growing Food Crisis

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has announced that during the current winter season, it has distributed 87,400 wheat seed packs across various provinces of Afghanistan, coinciding with the optimal sowing period, to support local farmers.

According to the published information, this aid has been provided with financial backing from the Asian Development Bank, the European Union, the governments of Japan, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, as well as the World Bank. The primary objective of this assistance is to offer immediate support for food production in the country.

FAO has warned that, with rising hunger and malnutrition in Afghanistan, helping farmers to produce food is not only a development program but also an urgent humanitarian action.

While the livelihood and food crisis continues in many areas of Afghanistan, critics say the Taliban administration has so far failed to provide sustainable access for farmers to agricultural support, markets, and effective resource management—a situation that has further increased the country’s dependence on foreign aid.
