Russia Expresses Interest in Building Railway Through Afghanistan

Russian media, quoting Alexei Overchuk, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, have reported that Moscow is seriously interested in constructing a railway line passing through Afghanistan, with preliminary talks on the matter already underway.

According to Overchuk, establishing new transit routes could pave the way for connecting Russia to countries in the Global South. Russian officials believe that this development, particularly in transportation and trade sectors, would be beneficial for Russia’s economy.

Due to its geographical position at the crossroads of Central and South Asia, Afghanistan has long been considered a potential regional transit route. Any practical project along this corridor would require technical, security, and administrative coordination with the Taliban administration and neighboring countries.

So far, no further details have been released regarding the exact route, project timeline, or the progress stage of discussions. Russian authorities have also refrained from providing additional information on the subject.
