WHO Concludes Training Program to Strengthen Cancer Care in Afghanistan

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced the completion of a multidisciplinary training program aimed at enhancing cancer diagnosis, treatment, and palliative care services in Afghanistan on December 22, 2025.
The program, which began in November, combined online training sessions with practical in-person workshops and concluded with participants taking evaluation exams. The primary goal of these trainings was to build the professional capacity of healthcare workers amid Afghanistan’s health system facing shortages of resources and expertise.
WHO emphasized that strengthening cancer care and palliative services, especially for patients with incurable diseases, is a critical need of the country’s health system. This sector has become more vulnerable in recent years due to widespread restrictions and decreased structural support.
While the Taliban administration is responsible for managing the health sector, international organizations including WHO are striving to address gaps in essential health services through educational and support programs. Nonetheless, health experts stress the necessity of sustainable, non-discriminatory, and needs-based access to healthcare services for the population.
