Iran and Herat Local Administration Discuss Cooperation on Herat-Khaf Railway Project

A technical delegation from the Islamic Republic of Iran’s railway department met with Sheikh Maulana Islamjar, the governor of Herat, to emphasize the need for cooperation with the local administration to coordinate work plans and facilitate the operation of the Herat-Khaf railway line.

According to the Herat provincial newsletter, the governor assured that the Taliban administration at the local level would provide ongoing cooperation to resolve existing issues and increase the efficiency of this railway route. He stated that regular coordination could enable more effective utilization of the railway.

During the meeting, both parties underlined the importance of the Herat-Khaf railway as a vital transit and trade corridor and deemed the expansion of technical and operational cooperation essential. This railway route connects Afghanistan, via Herat province, to Iran’s rail network, playing a significant role in goods transportation and reducing transit costs.

However, economic experts consistently stress that fully benefiting from such projects requires transparent management, systematic planning, and the removal of administrative obstacles—responsibilities primarily resting with the Taliban administration at both local and central levels.
