Greenland in Washington’s Sight: Trump Appoints Special Envoy Amid Rising Geopolitical Tensions

US President Donald Trump has appointed a special envoy to Greenland, describing the mission as a step to advance American national security interests. This move has sparked negative reactions from Greenland, Denmark, and several European countries.

According to the Associated Press, Trump designated Jeff Landry, the governor of Louisiana, as the US special envoy to Greenland. The US president has previously described Greenland as a strategic island rich in mineral resources and has advocated for a stronger military and control presence by Washington in the region.

Explaining his decision, Trump stated that Landry understands Greenland’s importance to US national security, and his mission will be to promote American interests within the framework of allied security and global stability.

In response, Jeff Landry posted on the social media platform X that he accepted this responsibility voluntarily, with the goal of incorporating Greenland into US territory. He emphasized that this role will not affect his duties as Louisiana’s governor.

Meanwhile, officials from the autonomous region of Greenland and the Danish government reiterated that the island is not for sale. They also condemned reports of increased US security activities in the area.

At the same time, Russia and several European countries have opposed US efforts to expand its influence in Greenland. Denmark’s Defense Intelligence Service has warned that competition among China, Russia, and the US for influence in the Arctic region has intensified significantly.
