Japanese Ambassador Calls Doha Process the Most Effective Framework for Addressing Afghanistan Crisis

Japan’s ambassador in Kabul has emphasized that the Doha process, due to its wide range of participants, is one of the most effective frameworks for addressing Afghanistan’s challenges, and Tokyo will continue its active support and presence in this process.

Kenei Masamoto told the media that, in his view, no other process has been as effective as the Doha process. With its broad participation, including the presence of the Taliban administration, it has the capacity to coordinate Afghanistan’s engagement with the international community.

According to the Japanese ambassador, the ultimate goal of the political aspect of the Doha process is to restore Afghanistan’s constructive interaction with the global community, a goal that he believes is fundamentally important for the Afghan people, the Taliban administration, and regional and world countries. He added that Japan, alongside other nations, is working on trust-building in certain specific areas.

Meanwhile, some political experts also consider the Doha process to play a key role in facilitating dialogue between the Taliban administration and the international community. Moeen Gul Chamkani, a political analyst, stated that alongside the Doha process, frameworks such as the Moscow format also exist, and Afghanistan needs active participation in both processes.

The third Doha meeting on Afghanistan was held on the 13th of Saratan 1403 in the Iranian calendar (early July 2024), with the participation of special representatives from over 25 countries and a delegation led by Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Taliban administration, in Doha. However, the date for the fourth Doha meeting has not yet been officially announced.
