UNDP: Small Businesses Are the Only Livelihood for Afghan Women Amid Restrictions

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has announced that under the current conditions in Afghanistan, small businesses are practically the only remaining economic avenue for Afghan women.

According to information released by UNDP Afghanistan, the organization has so far supported over 89,000 small enterprises across the country, 91% of which are managed by women. These initiatives have created more than 439,000 job opportunities.

These figures come amid a backdrop where, following the Taliban’s takeover, Afghan women face extensive restrictions on access to work, education, and social activities, with many formal employment avenues closed to them.

International organizations have repeatedly warned that the continuation of these restrictions not only violates the fundamental rights of women but also poses serious long-term damage to Afghanistan’s economy—calling for an urgent reconsideration of the Taliban administration’s policies.
