First Snow of the Year Falls in Several Afghan Provinces, Bringing Hope Amid Drought

Several provinces in Afghanistan witnessed the first snowfall of the year yesterday, an event that brings hope especially for farmers in areas affected by drought, who see it as a positive sign for the upcoming agricultural season.

Farmers say that this snow and accompanying rainfall could play a crucial role in improving soil moisture and boosting crop yields in the coming year. In regions where severe reductions in rainfall have caused extensive damage to farmland, this weather change has been welcomed.

One such area is the Jaghatu district of Maidan Wardak province, where residents speak of dried-up qanats and wells and damaged agricultural lands resulting from this year’s drought. Farmers in this district hope the continued precipitation can help compensate for some of the past losses.

Local residents and health workers also report that the drought and dust storms it caused have increased the spread of viral and bacterial diseases. They believe the rain not only benefits the environment but also helps cleanse the air, potentially reducing these illnesses.

According to reports, besides Maidan Wardak, snow and rain have fallen in Ghazni, Logar, Bamyan, and some other parts of the country. As the cold season begins, many citizens have emphasized the need to pay attention to vulnerable families, warning that winter’s harsh conditions could exacerbate concerns such as road closures, power outages, and difficulties in securing heating for impoverished households.
