Turkmenistan Cuts Power Supply to Herat Amid Winter Freeze

Imported electricity from Turkmenistan to Herat province has been cut off since 2:30 a.m. yesterday, severely disrupting daily life in the region, especially during the cold winter season.

According to a statement from the media office of the Taliban-appointed governor of Herat, the power line near the Baghcher Dam has gone out of service due to severe frost, leading to outages across large parts of the province.

The statement added that officials from Herat’s electricity department, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), are working to repair the damaged line and restore electricity, but no specific timeline for its return has been provided so far.

The governor’s office urged residents to take necessary precautions to protect children, the elderly, and vulnerable groups in the absence of electricity and amid freezing temperatures.

A significant portion of Herat residents rely on electricity to heat their homes, and the ongoing outage has once again highlighted the province’s lack of infrastructure and the absence of long-term energy solutions—a recurring concern voiced by citizens in recent years.
