Over 81,000 Rainwater Absorption Wells Built in Herat to Combat Drought

Herat’s Directorate of Agriculture and Livestock has announced the construction of more than 81,000 rainwater absorption wells, small reservoirs, and infiltration pits across the city and districts of the province in an effort to manage rainwater and mitigate the effects of drought.

Bashir Ahmad Ahmadi, Director of Agricultural Affairs at the Directorate, stated that during the first rainfall of the current year, Herat city recorded 35 millimeters of precipitation over the past two days, while some districts received up to 86 millimeters. According to him, this is seen as an encouraging start to the agricultural season.

Ahmadi added that timely rainfall could play a significant role in boosting agricultural yields and improving farmers’ livelihoods, especially given that a large portion of Herat’s population depends on agriculture.

Officials from Herat’s Agriculture Directorate emphasized that the digging of absorption wells and building of reservoirs in both urban and rural areas are key strategies for surface water storage, groundwater recharge, and reducing the impact of drought in the province.
