Weeks After Deadly Quake, Samangan Survivors Still Without Shelter

Weeks after a deadly earthquake struck Afghanistan’s Samangan province on 3 November, many affected families remain without proper shelter and say promised aid has not arrived.
Residents of the quake-hit areas report that the arrival of cold weather has worsened their situation, making it nearly impossible to live in tents. They emphasize that winter conditions pose serious risks to families already suffering from destroyed homes.
Local officials in Samangan say efforts are ongoing to secure humanitarian assistance, but acknowledge that aid has not yet been delivered on a wide scale. Fazl ur-Rahman Osmani, spokesperson for the governor of Samangan, noted that initial basic needs were met in the days following the disaster.
The quake, centered in Khulm district, also impacted the districts of Hazrat Sultan, Feroz Nakhchir, Dara-e-Suf Bala, Dara-e-Suf Payin, and the provincial capital. Residents in these areas continue to wait for meaningful action and response from the Taliban administration and responsible agencies.
