Russian Diplomat Warns West Is Using African Armed Groups Against Moscow and Beijing

A senior Russian official has warned that some Western countries and Ukraine are using armed and terrorist groups in Africa to carry out acts of sabotage against the interests of Russia and China—actions he claims pose a threat to regional and global security.
In an interview with the state-run TASS news agency, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin said that the cooperation between Kyiv and its Western backers with local terrorist groups—especially through direct support—has created a threat that extends beyond the African continent and could have global consequences.
According to Vershinin, these groups are particularly active in the Sahel region, where they are employed to intimidate civilians and conduct acts of sabotage, leading to increased instability across the area.
He further emphasized that Western nations are exploiting the financial and economic dependencies of some African countries in an attempt to draw them into geopolitical rivalries and adventures aimed at Russia and China. Vershinin added that the interests of former colonial powers remain deeply intertwined and continue to impact the African continent through resource extraction and political manipulation.
