Heavy Rainfall in Gaza Destroys 17 Residential Buildings, Displaces Thousands

Severe rainfall in Gaza has led to the complete collapse of at least 17 residential buildings, putting thousands of residents at serious risk, according to a spokesperson for Gaza’s Civil Defense.
Mahmoud Basal told local media that more than 90 other buildings are also in a highly unstable condition, and could collapse at any moment — a situation he described as a direct threat to the lives of thousands of Palestinian civilians.
Basal added that the rain and flooding have inundated over 90 temporary shelters. Many families have seen their tents badly damaged or fully submerged, leaving thousands without any form of temporary shelter.
Highlighting the severity of the humanitarian crisis, Basal reported that nearly 5,000 emergency calls have been registered with Civil Defense since the onset of the adverse weather conditions. He said some families are spending their nights without any form of safe refuge.
The Civil Defense spokesperson also announced that 17 people — including four children — have died as a result of the extreme cold, while others have lost their lives due to building collapses.
Basal urged the international community to take immediate action to assist Gaza residents and address their urgent humanitarian needs. He emphasized that the swift initiation of reconstruction efforts and the provision of secure housing are essential to protect both the lives and dignity of the people of Gaza.
