FAO Completes Emergency Relief Project for Herat Earthquake Victims

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has completed a $250,000 emergency project in Afghanistan’s Herat province, supported by the government of Kuwait, following the earthquakes and floods that struck the region in 2023.
In a statement posted on its X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, December 13, the FAO said the main objective of the project was to provide immediate support to affected families and strengthen their livelihoods in the impacted areas.
According to the FAO, more than 10,000 people—49 percent of them women—benefited from the initiative, underscoring the organization’s emphasis on the role of women in sustaining local livelihoods.
The project also included training in modern and sustainable agricultural techniques to help families improve crop production and become more resilient to future crises.
This assistance comes in the wake of devastating earthquakes in Herat that caused significant loss of life, destroyed many homes, and damaged agricultural lands—the main source of income for local families.
