UK Prime Minister Considers Troop Deployment to Ukraine

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the deployment of troops to Ukraine is among the options being considered by Kyiv’s international allies to strengthen the country’s security and defensive capabilities. Starmer said these plans are being developed within the framework of a “coalition of the willing” and are focused on providing future security guarantees for Ukraine.

In response to questions from committee chairs in the House of Commons, Starmer explained that the coalition is advancing on two parallel tracks: a political process involving national leaders and a military track involving defense planners. According to him, the objective of these efforts is to devise military plans for air, sea, and land operations, as well as to enhance Ukraine’s domestic capabilities.

The prime minister added that specific plans have been drawn up for each domain, and, if necessary, those options may include the deployment of ground troops. He emphasized that the key question at present is whether a just and lasting peace can be achieved.

In recent months, British officials have repeatedly expressed their readiness to send troops to Ukraine following a ceasefire. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned that the presence of NATO troops in Ukraine—under any flag or format—would be considered a direct threat by Moscow and is unacceptable.

At the same time, leaders of several major European nations have issued a joint statement asserting that security guarantees for Kyiv should include the formation of a European-led multinational force. They propose a coalition of willing countries, supported by the United States, to make up this force.
