Taliban Approves Plan to Divert Kunar River Water to Darunta Dam

The technical committee of the Economic Commission under the Taliban’s Prime Minister’s Office has approved a proposal to divert water from the Kunar River to the Darunta Dam in Nangarhar province, following technical discussions. The plan has now been referred to the Economic Commission for a final decision.

According to officials, the aim of the project is to address water shortages in the agricultural areas of Nangarhar, a province where a large portion of the residents’ livelihoods depend on farming.

The Kunar River is considered a key water source in eastern Afghanistan, while the Darunta Dam is an old infrastructure facility used for irrigation and electricity generation in Nangarhar. Connecting the two could improve water management in the region.

However, the final decision on the initiation and implementation details of the project remains with the Economic Commission. Further information will be released upon official announcement.
