Syrian Political Activist Assassinated in Sweida

Syrian media have reported that Anwar Fawzat al-Shaer, a political activist, was assassinated in a security incident in Sweida province. The incident has been described as a political assassination, and the perpetrators remain unidentified.

According to these reports, al-Shaer had previously criticized the positions of Hikmat al-Hijri, the spiritual leader of Syria’s Druze community—a stance which observers believe may be linked to the motive behind his assassination.

In previous similar incidents, two other Syrians, Ra’ej al-Matni and Maher al-Falihout, were also killed. Reports attribute those attacks to individuals close to al-Hijri.

Following this latest assassination, residents of Sweida staged reactions demanding a comprehensive, transparent, and impartial investigation. It was also noted that al-Hijri had previously issued a statement thanking the Zionist regime for what he claimed was support for the Druze community in Sweida, and had mentioned Donald Trump.

This event is part of a broader wave of political assassinations in Syria, a trend that has raised growing concerns over security and the accountability of responsible institutions since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
