UNICEF Provides Clean Drinking Water to Kunar Earthquake Survivors

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has announced that it has ensured access to clean drinking water for survivors of deadly earthquakes in Afghanistan’s Kunar province. The water supply was restored at the Khas Kunar camp, more than three months after the disaster.

Tajuddin Oyewale, UNICEF’s representative in Afghanistan, posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, December 14, that clean water is now available at the camp, benefiting displaced families. He added that UNICEF has implemented a sustainable and cost-effective water supply system powered by solar energy.

UNICEF emphasized that the use of solar energy can enhance the durability of water supply services under challenging conditions, a crucial factor in remote areas of eastern Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, the Taliban administration has reported high casualties and damages caused by the earthquakes. While vital services are largely being provided with support from international organizations, a lack of transparency and delays in domestic response have once again raised questions about the Taliban’s capacity and accountability in managing humanitarian crises.
