Al-Azhar Condemns Armed Attack on Jewish Hanukkah Event in Australia

Al-Azhar, Egypt’s foremost Islamic institution, has strongly condemned an armed attack on a Jewish Hanukkah ceremony near a popular beach in Sydney, Australia. In a statement released in response to the incident, Al-Azhar denounced the assault as a violation of both human and religious principles.

The statement emphasized that targeting civilians, regardless of their nationality, religion, or beliefs, is categorically unacceptable. It cited the teachings of the Qur’an and the Prophet Muhammad, which uphold the sanctity of human life and condemn the shedding of innocent blood.

Al-Azhar also praised the actions of Ahmad Al-Ahmad, a 43-year-old Muslim shopkeeper in Australia, who risked his life to disarm one of the attackers and helped save several people present at the scene.

“This humane and courageous act reflects a proper understanding of Islamic teachings and demonstrates that Muslims, by nature, are advocates of peace, coexistence, and compassion—not violence,” the statement read.

According to reports, at least 16 people were killed and more than 40 injured in the attack.
