WFP Warns of Mounting Economic Pressures in Afghanistan

The World Food Programme (WFP) has reported that Afghanistan’s economy remains under severe pressure, facing a series of simultaneous shocks that have significantly affected the livelihoods of millions of people across the country.

In its latest report, the WFP identified mass returns of migrants, recurring droughts, earthquakes, and shifts in regional trade relations and routes as key factors undermining Afghanistan’s economic stability. The agency warned that these conditions have further reduced the country’s economic resilience.

The report also noted that inflation has been gradually rising since early 2024, highlighting Afghanistan’s heavy dependence on imports, currency fluctuations, and vulnerability to global price trends.

Additionally, the closure of Afghanistan’s border crossings with Pakistan in October 2025 has redirected export routes toward India and Uzbekistan, while imports are now being increasingly sourced from Iran and Central Asian countries. Experts caution that the Taliban administration’s lack of a clear and effective economic policy has made managing these changes more difficult and has intensified pressures on people’s livelihoods.
