Afghan Returnees in Camps Appeal for Urgent Winter Aid

As temperatures drop, a number of Afghan returnees say they are facing severe shortages of winter supplies in camps designated for migrants and are calling on the Taliban administration to provide immediate and effective support during the cold season.

These individuals stress that the lack of proper shelter, unemployment, and limited access to heating equipment have made life particularly difficult for children and the sick. They warn that if conditions persist, it could lead to serious humanitarian consequences.

Khan Mohammad, one of the returnees, said they expect to receive necessary assistance during the winter in order to survive the season and later be able to rebuild their lives. Another returnee, Mohammad Awaz, who has ten children, expressed concern over his children’s health during the winter and called for the provision of basic necessities.

Some returnees note that due to illness and physical disability, they are unable to work during winter, and accuse the Taliban administration of neglect, saying it has increased their economic hardships. They also criticized the lack of a clear and accountable support plan for returnees.

Meanwhile, migration experts stress that the responsibility to assist returnees does not lie solely with humanitarian organizations. They assert that the Taliban administration must also play an active and accountable role in the distribution of winter aid. Mohammad Jamal Muslim, a migrant rights advocate, said that both charitable organizations and the ruling system must take more serious and practical action to address the situation of this vulnerable group.
