FAO Rebuilds Key Irrigation Canal in Helmand, Restoring Water to Villages

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has announced the reconstruction of 2.5 kilometers of the Lashkari Canal in Helmand province, with support from the World Bank. The project has restored water flow to several rural areas in the region.
According to the information provided, the project has improved access to irrigation and safe water for 15 villages, benefiting more than 36,000 residents.
The Lashkari Canal is one of Helmand’s main water channels and plays a crucial role in local agriculture and livelihoods. Damage to the canal in recent years had caused significant problems for farmers in the area.
International organizations emphasize that rebuilding water infrastructure in Afghanistan—alongside transparent and accountable management—can help enhance food security and reduce the vulnerability of local communities. This is seen as critically important under the current conditions faced by the country’s residents.
