Power Shortages Disrupt Urban Life Across Afghanistan, UN Warns

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has warned that many Afghan cities are facing severe electricity shortages, a situation that is directly impacting the daily lives of urban residents.
According to the agency’s assessment, families are enduring frequent daily blackouts, commercial activities are suffering, and children are losing the opportunity to study at night due to the lack of electricity—a factor that negatively affects education quality and social well-being.
The organization stressed that targeted investment in renewable energy could provide a fundamental solution to mitigating the electricity crisis and building sustainable and resilient cities capable of withstanding future challenges.
However, the lack of transparent planning and effective investment by the Taliban administration in energy infrastructure has raised concerns. Citizens and international organizations have repeatedly urged officials to address the issue with seriousness and accountability.
