US Criticizes Taliban for Arbitrary Detentions in Afghanistan

Dorothy Shea, the United States representative to the United Nations, has expressed concern over the human rights situation in Afghanistan, saying the Taliban administration has engaged in arbitrary detentions and used detainees as tools for political pressure. According to Shea, these actions demonstrate the Taliban’s complete disregard for international law and the standards of responsible governance.
She added that the Taliban’s current approach poses a serious obstacle to any dialogue or engagement between the group and the international community. She called on the UN Security Council to explicitly and formally condemn the Taliban’s human rights violations.
Shea emphasized that Washington’s primary focus in its Afghanistan policy remains the security of American citizens and the prevention of terrorist threats that could emanate from Afghan soil to other countries.
She also called for the immediate and unconditional release of all those detained by the Taliban administration, stating that respecting the human rights of these individuals is a fundamental obligation of the international community in its dealings with the Taliban.
