UNAMA and China Urge Global Engagement with Taliban Authorities

At a recent United Nations meeting on the situation in Afghanistan, the head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) emphasized the urgent need for constructive engagement between the Taliban authorities and the international community to ensure a viable future for the country. He noted that the Taliban leadership has also recognized that without establishing reasonable and purposeful relations with the world, the nation’s challenges cannot be adequately addressed.

China’s representative at the meeting echoed this stance, underscoring the importance of dialogue and cooperation between the global community and the Taliban administration. He called on the UN Security Council to take more practical and effective steps to support this process.

During another segment of the meeting, Tom Fletcher, the UN Deputy Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, expressed deep concern over Afghanistan’s worsening economic situation. He revealed that more than one million children in the country are suffering from severe malnutrition and warned that the ongoing economic crisis could push tens of thousands of Afghan families to the brink of hunger.

Security issues and political tensions between Kabul and Islamabad were also among the key topics of discussion among member state representatives. Several members emphasized the need for dialogue and cooperation between the two countries to prevent further escalation of regional instability.

Overall, the UN Security Council reiterated the Taliban administration’s responsibility toward the Afghan people and the importance of adhering to international standards of governance.
