Israeli Forces Open Fire on UN Peacekeepers in Southern Lebanon

United Nations peacekeepers (UNIFIL) have confirmed that Israeli soldiers opened fire on one of their patrols in southern Lebanon. The incident took place near the area of Shardeh, and according to UNIFIL officials, Israeli troops fired at the patrol despite being aware of its presence.

In a statement, UNIFIL described the Israeli action as a clear and concerning violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701. The resolution, adopted after the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah, aimed to establish a ceasefire and maintain stability along the Lebanon-Israel border.

The statement went on to say that repeated hostile incidents by Israeli forces against UN peacekeepers not only undermine the credibility of the international mission in Lebanon but also endanger the safety of UN civilian personnel. UNIFIL called for the immediate cessation of such actions and urged all parties to comply with their international obligations.

This is not the first time UN-affiliated forces have come under fire. In previous incidents, Israeli forces have also opened fire on UN patrols in southern Lebanon border regions.
