Over 200 Afghan Prisoners Repatriated from Pakistan and Iraq

Afghanistan’s Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation has announced that a total of 228 Afghan prisoners have been returned to the country this week after being released from prisons in Pakistan and Iraq.

According to the ministry, 224 of the returnees arrived from Pakistani prisons via the Spin Boldak border crossing in Kandahar province, while four others returned from Iraqi prisons through Nimroz province.

The ministry added that the process of repatriating Afghan nationals imprisoned abroad is ongoing in coordination with relevant authorities.

In recent years, a large number of Afghan citizens have been detained in neighboring and regional countries due to residency issues or minor offenses. Human rights organizations and civil society activists have previously urged the Taliban administration to address the situation of these prisoners with greater transparency and to ensure their rights are protected, noting that they represent one of the most vulnerable segments of the Afghan migrant population.
