UN Security Council Holds Quarterly Meeting on Afghanistan Crisis

The United Nations Security Council is holding its quarterly meeting today (Wednesday) to assess the latest developments in Afghanistan. Senior UN officials and Roza Otunbayeva, head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), are attending the session.
According to the official Security Council statement, the human rights situation is among the key topics to be discussed. Recent findings and reports by the United Nations indicate that widespread violations of citizens’ fundamental rights—particularly those of women and girls—remain a serious concern in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.
Analysts believe that the continued restrictions and lack of accountability within the Taliban administration have not only worsened the humanitarian situation but also stalled Afghanistan’s relations with the international community. The Security Council has previously urged the Taliban to honor its international commitments on human rights and to ensure inclusive participation in the country’s political structure.
It is expected that during this meeting, representatives of member states will exchange views on strategies for supporting the Afghan people and the future nature of international engagement with the Taliban administration.
