Russia Warns of Unpredictable Consequences from US-Venezuela Tensions

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, has expressed concern over escalating tensions between the United States and Venezuela, warning that any conflict between the two nations could have unpredictable consequences for the entire Western Hemisphere. She stated that the Russian government hopes Washington will refrain from escalating the crisis or initiating a full-scale military confrontation with Venezuela.
Zakharova emphasized that the current tensions are not accidental but rather deliberately fueled by Washington. She drew parallels between some of the newly released provisions in the U.S. National Security Strategy and the so-called ‘Roosevelt Corollary’ — a principle from the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt which allowed the U.S. to intervene in the domestic affairs of Latin American countries.
Meanwhile, reports in recent months have pointed to increased U.S. military presence in the Caribbean Sea and near Venezuela’s borders. While Washington claims the deployments are part of a counter-narcotics operation, experts have warned that targeting passing vessels without transparency and accountability could be viewed as extrajudicial executions and a clear violation of international law.
International relations observers have cautioned that such an approach not only further strains U.S. ties with Latin American countries, but also seriously endangers the region’s political and economic stability.
