Over 3,000 People With Disabilities Registered at Herat Orthopedic Center

The Red Cross Orthopedic Center in Herat has announced that more than 3,000 individuals with disabilities have been registered at the facility so far this year. According to doctors at the center, most of these disabilities are the result of landmines left behind from past conflicts, traffic accidents, frostbite, and burns.

The center’s officials stated that for patients in need, prosthetic limbs and financial assistance have been provided. However, the ongoing issues related to landmine explosions and traffic accidents remain a source of concern for Herat residents and human rights activists. Many of the victims cite the lack of sufficient preventive measures and poor enforcement of safety regulations as primary factors contributing to injuries and secondary disabilities.

Public health experts and disability rights advocates stress that the support provided by centers such as the Red Cross is vital to improving the quality of life for affected individuals. Nevertheless, they underscore the need for the Taliban administration and other responsible institutions to implement more effective and sustainable actions in mine clearance, public awareness campaigns, and enhancement of healthcare services, in order to prevent avoidable disabilities.
