Taliban Signs Cooperation Agreement with UAE’s DP World to Rebuild Afghan Ports

The Taliban-run Ministry of Finance has announced the signing of an economic memorandum of understanding with DP World, a company based in the United Arab Emirates. According to Taliban officials, the agreement aims to explore potential cooperation for the renovation and modernization of Afghanistan’s ports.
Abdullah Ezam, chief of staff to the Taliban Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, stated during the signing ceremony in Kabul that if the agreement is finalized, the Taliban administration intends to manage and operate the country’s ports using modern technology and in line with international standards.
He added that in the first phase, the Hairatan port, located on the Afghanistan-Uzbekistan border, will be reconstructed, followed by the Torkham port on the border with Pakistan.
This development comes amid ongoing disruptions over the past two months, during which the closure of Afghanistan’s border crossings with Pakistan has severely hampered trade and the movement of merchants. Critics argue that such agreements are being signed despite the Taliban’s failure to establish the necessary stability and transparency in the country’s economic management.
DP World is one of the world’s largest logistic and maritime transport conglomerates, headquartered in Dubai, UAE. The company operates in over 40 countries and has extensive experience in the management of international ports.
