Resident Killed in Herat as Concerns Grow Over Rising Insecurity

Herat, Sunday, December 6 – Local sources in Herat have confirmed that Najibullah Sultani, a resident of the province, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the early hours of the morning in the Mashwani area of the city. The incident comes amid a surge in violence and insecurity that has sparked serious concern among residents in this western Afghan province.
According to the same sources, this marks the second time the Sultani family has been targeted by such violent acts. Four years ago, the victim’s brother, Hamid Sultani—a well-known veteran of Herat’s football scene—was also murdered in a similar manner. These successive tragedies have cast a heavy shadow over the daily lives of local residents.
In addition, at least two other Herat residents lost their lives in armed robbery-related incidents last week, highlighting the broader scope of the region’s security crisis. Citizens of Herat have voiced deep concern and are calling on the Taliban administration to implement effective measures to curb the violence. They stress that no substantial steps have been taken so far to control the deteriorating situation, which continues to worsen by the day.
