UN Warns of Worsening Climate Impact in Afghanistan

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has warned that the increasing frequency of dust storms and prolonged droughts have led to widespread land degradation across Afghanistan. The agency emphasized that Afghanistan is among the most vulnerable countries in the world to the impacts of climate change.

In a statement released on Saturday, December 5, the UNDP announced plans to intensify efforts to protect vital resources such as water and soil, as well as the communities that depend on them.

This warning comes as the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) previously expressed concern over the ongoing drought in Afghanistan, identifying the provinces of Faryab and Badghis as among the hardest hit.

According to UN findings, farmlands, pastures, and forests in Faryab and Badghis have suffered severe damage, placing the livelihoods of many residents at significant risk.

Despite the growing scale of the climate crisis in Afghanistan, the Taliban administration has yet to take effective measures to address the situation. Continued inaction is expected to worsen environmental, economic, and humanitarian risks for millions of Afghans.
