Israeli Public Defender Warns of Dire Conditions for Palestinian Prisoners

The Wall Street Journal, citing a report by Israel’s Public Defender’s Office, has revealed that Israeli prisons are facing unprecedented overcrowding of Palestinian detainees, with prisoners subjected to severely deteriorated conditions.
According to the official findings, many Palestinian prisoners are being held in cells that fail to meet even the most basic human standards. Detainees are reportedly forced to sleep on the floor due to lack of bedding in overcrowded and unhygienic spaces.
The report also documents numerous instances of physical assaults by prison guards against Palestinian inmates. These attacks not only jeopardize the prisoners’ safety but also highlight the repressive system operating within the prison facilities.
Additionally, the report states that food quality in the prisons has dangerously declined, and access to medical services is significantly restricted. Poor sanitary infrastructure, a lack of adequate treatment, and systemic neglect of prisoners’ health have contributed to outbreaks of skin diseases and widespread malnutrition.
These dire conditions, disclosed by an official Israeli body, have intensified concerns among human rights organizations about serious violations of human rights in Israel’s prison system.
