Trump Announces Imminent Ground Operation Targeting Drug Trafficking Networks

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the country’s preparedness to launch a major ground operation against international drug trafficking networks. The operation, primarily targeting Latin American drug cartels, including those in Venezuela, is described by Trump as part of a new American strategy to combat drug-related threats.
Explaining the move, Trump said diplomatic efforts with Venezuela are no longer sufficient. He added that during a brief conversation with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, he discussed several potential decisions, although no further details of the exchange were revealed.
Trump also referenced a recent meeting in Moscow between Steve Witkoff, the U.S. special envoy, and Russian President Vladimir Putin, calling the talks constructive. According to Trump, Russian leaders are seeking an end to the war and a renewed focus on trade relations with the United States.
On the subject of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, Trump mentioned only that the “second phase of the agreement” would soon begin, without offering specific details.
The announcement of the anti-drug ground operation comes amid ongoing concerns over global narcotics production, with Afghanistan remaining a major hub. Although the Taliban claims to have banned opium poppy cultivation, field reports suggest that the lucrative drug trade continues unabated in various parts of the country. Endemic corruption and the absence of a legitimate government have made Afghanistan a fertile ground for the operations of criminal networks.
