FAO Distributes Organic Fertilizer to 3,000 Wheat Farmers in Afghanistan

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the World Bank, has launched a large-scale program aimed at improving agriculture in Afghanistan. As part of this initiative, a total of 906 metric tons of organic fertilizer has been distributed to 3,000 wheat farmers across various provinces of the country.

Additionally, the FAO has established demonstration farms to provide hands-on training for these farmers, enabling them to learn more effective and sustainable methods of wheat cultivation and fertilizer use. This effort is part of a broader strategy to reduce dependency on chemical fertilizers and improve soil quality in the long term.

According to preliminary data, the use of organic fertilizer has increased wheat yields by 14% and decreased the use of chemical inputs. These results highlight the positive impact of sustainable practices on Afghanistan’s agriculture sector.

However, given the Taliban government’s lack of effective oversight and support for the agricultural sector, such programs have only been made possible through the involvement of international organizations. Continued support is expected to help improve the livelihoods of Afghan farmers and reduce reliance on emergency aid.
