88 Arrested in Herat for Alleged Involvement in Organized Crime

Eighty-eight individuals have been arrested in Herat province over the past month in connection with various criminal offenses, according to local police. The arrests were made during multiple separate operations conducted by the Herat Provincial Police Command.
Police reports indicate that these individuals were allegedly collaborating with organized criminal gangs and were involved in thefts across different areas of Herat city and its surrounding districts.
Authorities said that during the operations, 18 different types of vehicles and over four million Afghanis in stolen cash were recovered and returned to their rightful owners. Additionally, in the past two days alone, 3.9 million Afghanis and four electric vehicles were retrieved from unidentified individuals and, following legal procedures, handed back to their owners.
Security experts point to the presence of organized theft rings in major cities as a consequence of legal voids and instability under Taliban governance. Despite the recent arrests, concerns persist over the rising rate of criminal activity in the absence of a transparent and accountable legal system.
Critics argue that the Taliban administration has failed to ensure lasting security or to effectively manage police resources. They assert that such operations are largely symbolic and fall short of addressing the root causes of crime. Without independent judicial institutions, the fate of those detained remains uncertain.
