Tajikistan Denies Talks with Russia on Afghan Border Security

Tajikistan’s Foreign Ministry has denied reports of negotiations or agreements with Russia concerning border security along its frontier with Afghanistan. Citing European media, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Shakhin Samadi dismissed a Reuters report on the matter as baseless and containing incorrect and unverified information.
According to Samadi, the ministry plans to issue an official statement to clarify that no discussions on border issues with Russia have taken place.
This denial comes after Reuters reported in recent days that Tajikistan had entered into consultations with Russia to secure its Afghan border, following the killing of three Chinese nationals near the area.
The border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan is considered one of the region’s most sensitive zones due to the presence of armed groups and suspicious activities linked to smuggling and extremism. Nonetheless, reports of military or security cooperation between regional countries and Russia often raise concerns over national sovereignty and independence within Central Asian states.
