UN Praises Afghan Women Human Rights Defenders Amid Growing Threats

The United Nations entity for gender equality, UN Women, has commended the ongoing efforts of women human rights defenders in Afghanistan in a statement issued as part of the global campaign ’16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.’ The organization praised these women for continuing their advocacy work despite facing serious threats, highlighting their commitment to supporting their communities and defending the rights of other women.
In its message, UN Women acknowledged that Afghan women engaged in human rights advocacy not only persist in organizing support programs but also act responsibly to protect fellow citizens—often paying a heavy price for their dedication in such challenging circumstances.
The UN praised the courage and leadership of these women and emphasized the need for the international community to strengthen its support, standing by them and renewing its commitment to their fundamental work.
At a time when the Taliban administration has imposed sweeping restrictions that violate women’s basic rights, the active and determined presence of these women human rights defenders stands as a symbol of civil resistance and a voice for the voiceless in Afghanistan.
