Tajikistan, Taliban Hold Phone Talks Amid Rising Border Tensions

Tajikistan’s Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin has held a phone conversation with Amir Khan Muttaqi, a senior official in the Taliban-controlled foreign ministry, to discuss the situation along the shared border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

The talks come amid growing concerns over insecurity and tensions along the frontier between the two nations.

According to a statement issued by the Taliban-run foreign ministry, the conversation focused on key areas including political relations, economic cooperation, border management, security coordination, and regional initiatives. The Taliban also claimed that the Tajik foreign minister expressed support for strengthening border cooperation between the two countries.

Amir Khan Muttaqi condemned a recent attack launched from Afghan territory that targeted Chinese nationals in Tajikistan, describing it as an attempt to sow discord between the two nations. He alleged that certain groups were trying to damage relations between Kabul and Dushanbe. Muttaqi also indicated the Taliban administration’s readiness to investigate the incident and enhance security cooperation with Tajikistan.

However, Tajikistan’s foreign ministry has yet to issue any official statement regarding the call. The absence of a response from Dushanbe has fueled skepticism over the Taliban’s account of the conversation and added to the uncertainty surrounding bilateral ties.
