Three Women-Led Businesses Launched in Logar, Afghanistan

The Department of Industry and Commerce in Afghanistan’s Logar province has announced the launch of three new production companies initiated by female entrepreneurs. The businesses operate in the fields of homemade food production, carpet weaving, and dried fruit processing.

According to information provided by the department, a total of 28 people are currently employed at these facilities. Of these, 20 work in carpet weaving, four in food production, and another four in fruit processing.

The Taliban administration claims that following the establishment of their so-called ‘Islamic Emirate,’ economic opportunities for women have expanded. However, many independent reports and observers have challenged this assertion, highlighting widespread restrictions imposed on women in education, social life, and economic participation since the Taliban takeover.

Although Logar’s Department of Industry and Commerce refers to more than 40 businesses and factories currently operating in the province, independent sources report that many of these ventures are struggling due to a lack of structural support for investors—particularly women. Political instability, the Taliban’s restrictive policies, and the absence of legal protections are cited as key factors hindering women’s economic involvement in the country.
