Suspicious Fire Damages School Near Taliban Headquarters in Badakhshan

A suspicious fire broke out on Thursday evening at Mir Fazlullah High School, located in the heart of Kishm city in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province. According to local residents who spoke to Amu TV, unidentified individuals set the school ablaze. The school is situated close to the Taliban police command post, but despite this proximity, the perpetrators have not yet been identified.

Local sources confirmed that the main building and classrooms sustained significant damage, and much of the educational materials were destroyed. However, a number of residents managed to salvage some items and eventually brought the fire under control after nearly two hours.

As of now, the Taliban administration has issued no official response regarding the incident. The lack of action and apparent indifference by local authorities has raised concerns among the residents of Kishm, sparking questions about the safety of educational institutions in the province.

Repeated attacks on educational facilities in Afghanistan, particularly in remote areas, have had long-term effects on children’s access to education. The Taliban’s silence on such incidents has cast doubt on their ability to secure even the most basic institutions of civil society.

This is not the first time educational centers have come under attack amid worsening insecurity. However, the fact that a school located within a Taliban security zone could be so easily targeted has raised new questions about the effectiveness and presence of the group’s security forces.
